Radiohead Stun the Grammy's

I'm not sure if it was the fact that the 2009 Grammy awards were so freaking horrible, or the fact that Radiohead are so freaking great, but Radiohead left me sitting there with my mouth open last night.

Playing the track "15 Steps" with the USC marching band was nothing short of pure genius. Take that Coldplay!

Neil Young and Devo?!

So in 1982, Neil Young co-directed and stared in a movie called "Human Highway". It also featured Dennis Hopper, future "Twin Peaks" Doctor-Russ Tamblyn, and Devo. Yes.....Devo.

The whole film is a complete mess but worth the viewing just to see that they actually made the thing. And this clip of Neil and Devo rocking "My My, Hey Hey" may be the strangest 9 minutes in rock and roll history. I know I couldn't turn it off....

Economy getting you down? Well, the amazing songwriter Loudon Wainwright III feels your pain. And in classic folk style, he's written a new song about it which he played for NPR. It sure brightened my day a bit.

So Wilco frontman extraordinaire Jeff Tweedy is out in the cold midwest playing some solo shows. Besides playing the killer Wilco songbook and some inspired covers, Jeff also broke out a couple of great new tunes. We can only assume the new tracks will be on the forthcoming 2009 Wilco release. Once again, we can enjoy them thanks to the magic of You Tube.

Desperate Man Blues

Hello again friends. Sorry I haven't posted in almost 2 weeks. I just haven't felt inspired by anything enough to share with you. That was until today.

Thanks to the nice folks at Pitchfork, I watched an amazing movie tonight that just made my weekend. The film is documentary on renowned 78 record collector and radio personality Joe Bussard called "Desperate Man Blues".

Joe has been collecting country, blues, and jazz recordings from the 20's and 30's for over forty years and has amassed a collection of over 25,000 platters. Watching the shear joy in Joe as he spins a Charlie Patton side reminds me of why I gravitated towards music in the first place. It lifts your soul and makes you forget the world around you, if only for 2 or 3 minutes.

For the same reason I love Bob Dylan's Theme Time Radio Hour, this film helps educate (all who are lucky enough to see it) on just how many musical treasure are out there that you won't find on ITunes. It almost makes me want to through my MP3 player out the window. Almost.
